Notes from Clyfford Still is a new commission by Playground Ensemble, and a companion piece to composer Nathan Hall’s recent collaborative workshops and performances at the Clyfford Still Museum. This work uses texts and quotes from the painter’s personal notebooks and correspondence. It paints a musical portrait of the artist, showing not only his unrelentingly independent pursuit of his art, but also moments of uncertainty, introspection, and tenderness.

Nathan Hall uses music as an artistic medium to explore a variety of fields including science, nature, the fine arts, history, and sexuality. Originally from Western NY, Nathan Hall is a former Fulbright Fellow to Iceland, and holds his Doctorate in Musical Arts from the University of Colorado, Boulder. His works have been performed and exhibited around the world by groups as diverse as the String Orchestra of Brooklyn, The Gay/Lesbian Chorus of San Francisco, Ars Nova Singers, and a convention of roller coaster enthusiasts. Nathan’s music has won numerous awards, and he has been the recipient of several residencies, such as the Ogilvy Travel Fellowship to Ireland and Denver Art Museum’s first Creative in Residence.
