Conrad Kehn- director
Conrad Kehn (Director, Voice, Laptop) is a composer, performer, educator, and arts administrator. He is the founding Director of The Playground; a chamber ensemble dedicated to modern music. An award winning composer, Conrad’s genre-crossing output includes traditional and contemporary chamber music, experimental and multi-media works, and popular music. His work has been performed across the U.S. in numerous concert halls, festivals, clubs, galleries and underground. Recent commissions include the Colorado State Music Teachers Association, violinist Susan Jensen, and members of the Colorado Symphony. In 2012 Conrad was composer-in-residence with the Boulder Symphony. As a vocalist, Conrad specializes in improvisation and contemporary music. Improvisatory collaborations include Wu Fei, Tatsuya Nakatani, James Ilgenfritz, Michael Wittgraf, and Nate Wooley. Concert hall repertoire include Bolcom’s Satires, Ligeti’s Nonsense Madrigals, Morton Feldman’s O’Hara Songs, and George Crumb’s Songs, Drones, and Refrains of Death. Conrad has performed and recorded both as a soloist, and with the improv ensembles Approval Seekers, Mystery Children and Rhythmic Void, multimedia freak show itchy-O, defunct rock bands Kallisti and Skull Flux, and of course The Playground. As a soloist his quasi-improvised performance set combines 20th century avant-garde and spoken word record loops with laptop manipulated drum beats and live vocals. He also holds a Master’s degree in Composition (2000) and Bachelor’s degree in Commercial Music/Recording Technology (1996) from the University of Denver’s Lamont School of Music.
